Gretchen – Louisville, KY

October 2019

For the month of October, we focus on our Metastatic Breast Cancer sisters. Meet Gretchen MBC survivor living in Louisville, KY….Ā

Gretchen and her sweet husband, Jeff.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself that has nothing to do with cancer.

My favorite hobby is remodeling our home in the historic neighborhood of “Old Louisville.”

What brought you hope as you faced cancer?

My hope has been sustained by my very loving and supportive husband, family and friends.

How do you live life over cancer?

It has been a learning process but I strive to be positive and focus on enjoying life to the fullest each day.

How did you become connected with Hope Scarves?Ā

I connected with Lara after my initial diagnosis in 2010. We were introduced through a mutual friend with BC. It was so reassuring to talk with someone that truly identified with what I was going through.

What do you wish other people knew about Hope Scarves?

Hope Scarves is a wonderful resource for people facing cancer. In addition to a scarf donation, it allows you to connect with others, share your story and offer inspiration and hope as they begin their cancer journey.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about sending a Hope Scarf to someone facingĀ cancer?

Absolutely!

What is one of your dreams or goals for the future?

Connected by MBC and a passion for living life over cancer (and silliness) Lara & Gretchen have become dear friends.

My dream/wish is for research to find a cure for this terrible disease. My next ā€œgoalā€ is to run the Urban Bourbon Half Marathon (in Louisville, KY) this month.

What is your favorite inspirational quote?

“The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.” – Michelangelo

If your friends or family describe you in a couple of words, what would they say?

I took a survey! Compassionate. Dedicated. Stubborn.

Please share something you learned facing cancer.

Iā€™ve learned to be more present in the moment and to embrace life. My focus is on the people and experiences that bring me joy!

Diagnosed with MBC in her lungs, Gretchen is the FASTEST woman on the Hope Scarves Outrunning Cancer 1/2 marathon team. Mike drop.
